In the summer of 2015, Anita and Chirag had a great opportunity to visit Lima, Peru for one week, immersing themselves in its intriguing culture. Simply put, it was an unforgettable experience for both of them! They experienced firsthand the huge difference between the medical services provided in impoverished communities in Lima and the health care that we are provided here in Canada. As on all MEDLIFE trips, they were able to shadow the doctors, nurses, dentists, gynaecologists, and pharmacists. Though this hands-on experience, although language was sometimes a barrier, they interacted with patients of all ages. MEDLIFE provides students the opportunity to explore medical practice beyond the borders of their comfort zone, while simultaneously integrating an aspect of community service to the local communities. For instance, Anita and Chirag were able to build a community stairway along with colleagues from various universities all around the world. This may seem quite a miniscule service project, but the impact it left for the local community was immense. Stairway's like this one allow the communities to come together and get more accessible access to their homes and community space. In addition, they were able to build a local cafeteria to allow subsidized meals for children who attend school. What is taken for granted here in Canada was a luxury for these students in Peru. The donations you make help us accomplish the funding required to provide facilities such as these to those who need it the most. For them, it was an honour representing Canada and the University of Toronto during their journey.

As founders, they envisioned a more cohesive MEDLIFE opportunity for members at UTSG. In addition, their outset goals were towards building strong ties between the three campuses at the University of Toronto. Furthermore, members of the club were and still are encouraged to participate on our overseas trips this year and for many years to come! They hoped to build a legacy at the University of Toronto and see our Chapter grow to new heights, which we continue to do today!
